What We've Been Up To in 2007

  • Bingo Event
Friday 25th May 2007 saw one of the countries favourite games coming to Trehafod hall. Cymmer Ward Communities First and Castle Leisure staged a fun afternoon of bingo at the Trehafod Community Village Hall, supported by Age Concern and the Rhondda Crime Prevention Partnership.

The purpose of the event, besides having some fun, was to raise awareness of community safety, especially concerning rogue trader’s and door to door con-men who may target older people.

The event was well attended and everyone present really enjoyed the event. Cymmer Ward Communities First would like to thank Castle Leisure, for not only donating some of the really great prizes that were won during the afternoon, but also a great bingo caller (Gemma) who helped make the event such as success.

  • Art Exhibition Success
The Dai Davies Art Group and Ferndale Art Society held an inspiring Art exhibition at Porth Plaza between the 11th and 14th June, in line with the 2007 Porth Carnival. 28 local artists took part in the exhibition with over 100 paintings on display, many of which were available to buy.

The Rheola Bridge was the subject of a local painting competition with the winner being announced at the official opening of the art exhibition and Porth Carnival on Friday 13th June.

Local artists of all ages who attend the Dai Davies Art club were invited by Porth Chamber of Trade to create a painting of the bridge.

The entrants artwork was displayed during the exhibition, with a watercolour painting by Les Pearce, of Hillside Terrace, Wattstown taking first place. Keen artist Les, 72 said he was, “a bit surprised but very pleased”, to win the competition.

Les was presented a cheque for £150 and a bottle of Champaign, for his winning painting, which can be seen on www.porthbiz.com, a website for local businesses.

The Dai Davies Art group meet weekly from 1:30 to 3:30pm, restarting Friday 14th September at the Dai Davies Community Centre, supported by WEA and Cymmer Communities 1st.

  • Flytipping, Recycling & Face Painting
Over 50 community members, young and old came together on Saturday 9th June to help make a local play area a safer and cleaner place to enjoy. Local volunteers were the main driving force behind the day at Hennlys Park, Rhiwgarn with children, parents and grandparent’s litter picking within the park and surrounding mountainside.

Everyone made a fantastic effort in helping out, two large skips and over 15 bags of rubbish were filled on the day. The community were not alone with Cymmer Communities First, RCT CBC housing, RCT CBC Environmental services and Phil from the Greencare team all helping out.

Everyone made the most of the fantastic weather on the day, not only helping their community, but also enjoying all the free activities sponsored by Cymmer ward Communities First, including face painting, environmental art and crafts, cricket, rounders etc. Cymmer ward Communities First would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved especially volunteers Ros and Vicki, well done everyone.

  • Well I Didn't Know That! - Older Peoples Information Surgeries
On the 15th January Cymmer Ward Communities First and Age Concern Morgannwg joined forces to chat to older members of the Cymmer community. The team visited the Dai Davies community centre and Dyllas court sheltered housing with an abundance of information and freebies.

There was information about courses, groups etc, lots of information about Age Concern and how they can help, a dedicated person to give help and advice on benefits, and a chance to chat about what people like and don’t like about their community, along with plenty of friendly company and refreshments.

The free energy saving light bulbs and room thermometers also went down a treat. One resident from Dyllas court commented that it was "good to know what help was available and nice that people will take the time to sit and chat with us".

Louise, Karen and Hayley had a great day talking to and getting to know people within the Cymmer community and we hope that everyone who came to see us took away some useful information.

  • Big Cook, Little Cook
During February half term big and little cooks from all over Trebanog, Cymmer, Britannia and Trehafod, took part in Cymmer Ward Communities First Big Cook Little Cook intergenerational project.

The sessions ran every afternoon from Monday 19th February to Thursday 22nd February 2007 in the teaching kitchen at Ysgol Gyfyn Y Cymmer Rhondda, Cymmer. Children aged between 4 and 10 years old brought their parent’s and grandparents along to get stuck in and make some very tasty dishes.

The project brings families together not only to have fun but to also encourage healthy balanced diets and basic food hygiene.

Everyone who attended had a great time making homemade pizza, beef burgers, apple pie and cup cakes. They enjoyed it so much they all want to come again next time!

Mrs Evans of Treharne Rd, Cymmer said "Usually I don't like the kids making a mess in the house, especially the kitchen, but after one day at Big Cook Little Cook we went home and had a great time making pancakes, it was nice making time to do things together".

  • St David's Day - Celebrating Local Talent and Welsh Cakes
St David’s Day 2007 saw community members from the Trebanog, Cymmer, Glynfach, Britannia and Trehafod areas celebrating in style. Cymmer Ward Communities First worked in partnership to bring local residents not just one, but two fantastic family events.

The first event was held in the Dai Davies Community Centre on Friday March 2nd, where local community members enjoyed singing and dancing from Cymmer Junior and Infant schools, Ysgol Gufyn Y Cymmer Rhondda and a team of local volunteers.

The March 2nd event also celebrated local talent from the Dai Davies Art club who held an exhibition on the day showing their work, there were even offers to purchase exhibits.

The day was rounded of with well-deserved refreshments, with the welsh cakes going down especially well! Over 80 People, of all ages, attended the event, which was an outstanding success; everyone is already looking forward to next year.

The Lewis Merthyr Junior band teamed up with Hafod Primary School for the second event. The third annual St David’s Day concert at the Rhondda Heritage Park Museum was held on Sunday 4th March with both band and choir giving an excellent performance. Over 70 family and friends packed into the gallery to hear traditional welsh music and song, celebrating Wales and our local young talent. The event also helped to raise funds for both The Lewis Merthyr Junior Band and Hafod primary school.

Cymmer Ward Communities First would like to say a great big thank you to everyone who took part in and helped organise both St David’s day events.
